Moved the ammo and reloading stuff in my own vehicle. They did take several of the guns as long as they were locked up in the safe. I've done this a couple of times. Make sure they load the safe and rollaway tool chest on first so they can't get to it after the trailer is loaded. They would not take the Polaris Ranger Crew or the Boston Whaler. Had to tow those ourselves. Moving the wife's car in an enclosed trailer was $1 per mile. Total including the car was $24K. Last edited by kelbro; 12/13/18. |

I sold /gave away a lot of stuff and I wish I’d let more go. Penske was by far the cheapest option for me....26ft box truck, the biggest they rent. Don’t skimp on furniture blankets or rope. Pack it tight and tie it off or you’ll wish you did. Figure out how long you think the drive should take and add at least another full day. Plan your stops at specific hotels (as much as possible) and check into parking at those hotels, as parking at some of them is not big truck friendly. Don’t push it and try to move too late in the fall or early in the spring unless your move is in the South.....not fun to drive a fully loaded 26ft box truck over mountain passes in a blizzard. Don’t ask me how I know. I was fortunate to have a good friend who lives close to where I moved and he flew to TN/helped me pack the truck and drove my pickup along with me. My wife moved a few months later due to some business that had to be finished up in TN. I flew back and drove back to ID with her. I think the move would’ve been a lot more stressful if she and the dog had been tagging along with the big truck. If you can figure out a way to keep the moving truck caravan small it’s probably a good idea. By the way....I was able to keep it right around 5k that way, all up, including gas and hotels. |

Packers and movers are day laborers at used to be $1 per 100 lbs loaded. They show up every morning hoping for work. You can call the local moving company dispatch office and hire the laborers on off days for $15 hour and they are happy. Last week and first week of the month are their busiest so plan accordingly. Not all companies will let their guys do that so just keep calling or stop in to the dispatch offices. The companies also have a warehouse where they sell used boxes for $1-2 each and give you all the white packing paper you want. You can buy packing box tape for $1-2 roll and get padded wrapping paper for mirrors and such. Have them pack you up and load the truck, you drive. I have had the packing crew show up with extra boxes and papers and just wanted a few dollars extra. Just buy lunch and give a little tip and they will fight to be the crew to load you up too. Professional packers are worth the money, they know how to pack it full and tight so it does not shift. Save the headache and heartache by using them. You can call destination moving company dispatches and have a crew waiting on the other end. I have done it 4-5 times that way no problems. You just have to drive. Ship the cars for very nominal fee. I have also hired local moving crews (business cards are often at storage units) 3 guys for $80 hour. They loaded two 26 ft trucks in 3 hours from storage units and packed it right on my last move and had a dispatch office 3 man crew on othe end for next day unload. Was less than $300 on each end., and packing was about another $400 or so. You have options. You can pull a large trailer with a 26 footer to in lieu of second truck. Get a lift tailgate truck to load large heavy items like a safe, tool boxes etc. Last edited by BountyHunter; 12/13/18. |

The last time anyone tried it on Mom's side, that was how it went. After serving with George Washington, Colonel Israel Shreve crossed the Alleghenies from New Jersey to the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania to build and run a mill for Washington. I've got his folding bookcase that came with him right here next to me. For the next 200 years after that, Mom's family traveled light. I guess they learned their lesson. Dad's family came all the way from Germany with nothing but suitcases. This was after a good 500 +years in the same spot. Imagine that yard sale! KYHillChicks clan, at least one side, made the move over the Cumberland Gap in a wagon. They were neighbors of George Washington by Mount Vernon, and were his mother's kin. They got to the first level spot on the other side of the Gap, put down roots and are still there. They'd had enough of the crap, and it took them a generation or two to leak out into the surrounding counties. I grew up a suburban rat out in the Big Sprawl in a brand new subdivision. Folks were always relocating from all over to work at P&G, GM, GE, Alice Chalmers, etc. A month didn't go by without a big moving van on the street. What I can tell you is that a big trans-continental mover will cost you a bundle, but most of the worries and nearly all of the liabilities are taken care of. Yes, I saw some rough deals, but it was mostly about delays, and stuff getting crunched in the move. The best DIY story I can give you is from KYHillChick's side of the family. One branch tried to make the move from WV to KY using their own truck. The father was a marked man and in hiding-- something to do with dynamite and a coal strike and the town bridge. The mother and the kids were all crammed into a truck carrying all their worldly possessions.. They were on RT 92 out by Yamacraw and Mom lost control of the truck on the big downgrade going down to the crossing of the Big South Fork. She managed to get all the kids out before the truck went over the side of the mountain. It's been 50 years, but you can still see the pile of wreckage strewn down the mountain. Me? When Satan and I moved to the 'Burbs back in '89, we called the local Mayflower affiliate. The dude that took my call refused to come out and give an estimate and said, "So what you have here is a 2 bedroom house?" "But. . . But. . ." What he didn't know was that the other 3 bedrooms and the attic were filled with furniture and stuff from the fact that Satan and I were both only children and all the old family members had died and left us their junk. I asked for a written estimate and I got one. Two guys showed up late by 3 hours with an itty-bitty truck. When it was all over, we had a panel truck filled and 11 movers dragging stuff out of the Van 12 hours later on a 5 mile move-- on a fixed bid of less than $1K. As I wrote the boss the check, he said, "Thank you, and please, when you go to make your next move, think about calling United." Nothing fancy-my boss and I moved me in a rental truck with a car dolly attached. We had to stop in Chicago to pick up optical equipment from a store our company had shut down in that area. I wondered why the store didn't make it until we got there to pick the stuff up. We had to wait for armed security to go in there with us, as it was in a very bad neighborhood, and they were pretty certain the truck would get stolen while we were in the building packing stuff up. We worked quick and got the heck out of there. Unnerving that places are that rough that you have to guard your vehicle. molɔ̀ːn labé skýla |
