*** just venting ****If you're in my network, you probably have some sort of connection to the translation industry at some level. Here is some friendly unsolicited advice for you: do not, under any circ*mstances, introduce translators to games related to words, vocabulary, spelling, finding errors, etc This will ruin their lives.I'm currently obsessed with Soletra (thanks to my former dream team partner Carla Reis)! How am I supposed to finish my day today knowing there are still 12 words out there that I couldn't find? 👀 Those six letters have got to be kidding me.It's like leaving a crosswords puzzle unfinished. Gaaaahhhh.Raise your hand if you feel the same.----------Update: the 12 words are now only 3 and I honestly don't know what's worse 🥲

Now I have some kinds of situation with the game translation companiess regarding having my credit and expanding my portfolio;📝A) "Hey, the dev is offering to have your name on the credit screen!"📝 B) "We agree with the devs to have translators' name on the credit, always! If not, we will kick their a**!"📝 C) "Sorry the dev says no to mention the title on your portfplio, instead offering 0.01USD/word bonus."📝 D) "Please sign our updated contract where we decided to try to persuade the devs for having your name on the credit."📝 E) "Sorry, the dev says no. Period." Which one are you familiar with? Appearantly, the wind is changing.

If you want to localise your game for the international market for the first time, don't do it like this!26 years after its initial release in Japan, Front Mission 2 was finally released internationally with its recent Remake by Forever Entertainment S.A. on the Nintendo Switch. However, people quickly found that the translation work done for the game was less than the bare minimum - either thrown through an aggressively literal MT with no human-in-the-loop, or community sourced for peanuts to anyone who wanted to earn a quick lunch break with no proofreading. For a single-player RPG with a strong emphasis on its political narrative, skimping on #localisation is not only a certified Bad Idea™️, it's a death warrant. If your game is unplayable because people are spending more time figuring out your bad translation, this is going to reflect in reviews, your sales figures, and your own reputation as developer / publisher. As an enjoyer of SRPGs (and someone who is currently going through Front Mission 1st REMAKE!), this makes me deeply sad. At least get in touch with a language professional and ask them to give you a list of things you need to pay attention to.#gamedev #gameloc #l10n #translation #t9n #localization #localizehttps://lnkd.in/ePi83ZHE

Amidst all the policy changes we've been seeing these past few days, I want to remind devs to ask for the names of the translation team. Most agencies would put out these policies, try to show the world they've changed, but only if you (dev or plub) ask directly for our names.Do you know how many times we ask the PMs about the credits and the response is "They haven't asked. We'll let you know if this changes."?So please, please: ask. And make them abide by their new policies, statements or whatever they put out in social media to gain your favour.#TranslatorsInTheCredits

#Xl8Mas, day 3Today I present you "As Dusk Falls". This game was complex to localize, mostly because I had to work on LEAF, quite an unfriendly tool. But it was a big joy nonetheless. Mostly I translated dialogues, and I got completely drawn in by the plot of this interactive drama. It was also my first post-editing job without me knowing what that meant. I remember deleting whole sentences quite often to make it sound fluent. Oh, yes, uncredited. But a great experience.#PortfolioXmas #TranslatorsInTheCredits

We're doing a new gamedev.world and we're looking for speakers who want to talk about game dev in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, French, Japanese, Chinese, or Hindi. We'll translate all the talks to all the other languages for everyone to learn from each other! The link below has information on talk submissions in all 8 languages, and there's a mailing list if you're not on social medias as much anymore but still want to be kept up to date. We expect to send no more than two or three emails to you!Talks are accepted on any topic related to game development, including design, art, code, narrative, management, sound, music, voice acting, QA, business, HR, marketing or any others disciplines in games. Talks are up to 30 minutes long to give our translator team breaks. Keep in mind we're doing live dubbing with professional translators: a script is strongly preferred but not needed, and we can handle you ad libbing even if you provide a script. We intend to make the experience as straightforward as possible for our speakers. Our goal remains to challenge the language barrier in game development and and to truly democratize global knowledge to developers globally, to be a (& sadly still "the") games conference that is truly accessible to most of the planet.
