Its plot follows John Kinley, a U.S. Army Green Beret master sergeant, and Ahmed, his Afghan interpreter, fighting the Taliban. The film was theatrically released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and STXfilms in the United States on April 21, 2023, received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed $21 million.

Although Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is not based on one person's true story, it is inspired by historical precedent. In 2016, two years before the events depicted in the movie, The Smithsonian ran a haunting piece entitled, The Haunting Fate of the Afghan Interpreters the U.S. Left Behind.

They make a daring escape together after Kinley's contacts come through and fly them out; the film ends with the two men finding a moment of peace once Ahmed's family's visas have been dispatched.

Although this is an English-language movie, it has many subtitles because of where it takes place.

The official story is that we are calling this film "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" to distinguish it from the 2006 film The Covenant. But I've got another theory. I reckon we're putting Guy Ritchie's name on it, because otherwise no one would believe it was one of his. The Covenant is a film in three parts.

At its core, the film weaves a heartwarming tale of camaraderie between a dedicated US soldier, portrayed with finesse by Jake Gyllenhaal, and an Afghan Interpreter, brought to life by the talented Dar Salim. The loyalty that Gyllenhaal's character exhibits toward the interpreter is endearing and genuinely portrayed.

The Afghan characters in the film mostly speak some dialect of Persian, and the memory of being surrounded daily by that language came flooding back. I could often understand the Afghan characters without the subtitles. The story concerns Army Sgt. John Kinley and his Afghan interpreter Ahmed.
