far. high winds expected throughout today, which you make the task of firefighting more difficult. our evening anchor liz cook happened to be driving through that area yesterday and shot this footage. we know many in the bay area use interstate 5 to get to southern california and we will get more updates on the post-fire throughout the day. in the bay area, fire crews had to deal with multiple small grass fires popping up on saturday. most of them in the south bay near san jose. the post getting to about 20 acres with at least one in sunnyvale as well. no reports of any injuries or damage associated with the fires. in santa rosa, fire officals say would be and dry june raised the fire risk in the area this weekend. grass fires are the biggest risks right now . weather experts expect the potential fuel to keep drying out as we move into the summer. and we spoke with a woman in santa rosa who has lived through many fire seasons and said her family is paying close attention.

years worth of props. in a fire last weekend, the new production of the sunshine boys went on a scheduled. amanda hari explained what happened and how they managed to get it altogether. >> reporter: as soon as a fire happen, one of the board of directors says her mind did not go towards what they were losing, but instead, towards the future and the show. and what they would need to make it happen. >> we are getting by. let's put it that way. all of our past was there, all the photos from the shows going back to 1979. show posters. all of those memories were gone. >> reporter: heartbreak for the pittsburg theater company and diana, a member of the theaters board of directors. she spent my sunday preparing for opening night of the company's production of the sunshine boys. moments after arriving home, messages starting coming in that there were house was on

fire. >> i followed the fire trucks over, saw the blaze going on and, that is that. nothing more. >> reporter: she said firefighters were selling through the walls to get into the building. >> the roof was fully engulfed, flames were billowing out the top and i knew it was going to be a total loss at that point. >> reporter: 45 years of set pieces, props and costumes were lost in a matter of minutes. in just five days, they would have to put on the show. the only thing that has set up at california theater in pittsburg with a backdrop walls. >> we put a list out on facebook of what we needed and all of a sudden by wednesday we had everything we needed. >> reporter: she said the theater community and the pittsburg community immediately did what they could to help. mary wilson, heard about it on the news. she was stunned, looking at the images of the fire. >> to have all of these items lost, is a tragedy. really sad.

>> reporter: wilson said she knew she would come out and support the company by seeing the show. >> they are local. and it is community. and it is fun. we enjoy it. >> reporter: many of the people came to the show stopped to look at the photos from the fire, reed about what happened, and leave donations. although the show is happening, there is work to do. in addition to all the equipment, they also need to find a new location for a potential warehouse. >> our goal is to raise at least $50,000 because we know the cost of warehouses and we had a very good deal with the city , because they were supporting us. we do not expect to have that in the future. >> reporter: right now they are grateful for what they do have a successful show, and support. >> you just feel that community and you are part of something bigger than yourself .

>> reporter: rebuilding will take time and multiple efforts to raise money. on july 27th, they will have a benefit concert right here at california theater in pittsburg to help raise some more money . they are helping the community will continue to come out and support. thousands of people turned out along san francisco's fillmore street for a juneteenth freedom celebration. ♪ that is four-time grammy award winner yolanda adams performing at the festival. she is one of the best gospel selling artists. this event is for families and an opportunity to bring together the black community in san francisco. >> for us being here means we are here to wrap our arms around our first to let them know we will be here for the next 100 years and enjoy and celebrate freedom. >> this was the 79th annual

welcome back. it is 10 minutes after 6:00. people living in millbrae are on alert this morning for a mountain lion in the area. after one was seen yesterday afternoon on vallejo drive. near interstate 280. no reports of any injuries. but people are warned to be cautious around any mountain lion and call 911 if you see it. we took a look at the forecast in the top of the newscast and you can see how the marine layer is not coming back and we will be relatively warm. there is one other important item in the forecast , besides the no marine layer, it is a strong northwest winds if you look at the timeframe , from our saturday night, which we have seen this pickup, all the way through sunday we are looking at tonight at 8:15. there is a strong surge. look at the purple off the coast. purple on the key shows you where you have 50 mile an hour gusts over the water. it is windy. and the winds are

funneling onshore and they will be funneling on twitter today. this is later tonight. you can see the winds pick up in intensity and less put some numbers on and come in for a closer look to spotlight one timeframe. one of the windier periods tonight around 8:00. northwest winds , that are funneling through all the passes and gaps like the golden gate, the san bruno gap, all the orientated openings along the coast range, where strong seabees that sea breeze winds can rest through. it is not windy enough for a wind advisory and not terrible enough for a red flag warning, although we are concerned that the winds from a fire standpoint and this is one of the reasons i say that. if you take a look at the relative humidity today and this is looking ahead to 11:30 this morning, the numbers are low and the map is color-coded and you get into the deep shades of brown. we are seeing decreased humidity over the next 36

hours. here is an example. the humidity yesterday, the numbers are noticeably higher. the humidity levels will be lower today and the wind will be up and because of that there are red flag warning's but not in the bay. for the bay, we are not quite reaching the necessary criteria for windspeed and relative humidity. high winds, low humidity. we are not at the threshold and those are the measurements that are looked at by the national weather service when issuing red flag warning's. there are red flag warning zfor solano county, the northern one third and that goes from our 11:00 saturday night through monday. when you take a look at lake county, you have one. red flag warning is telling you the conditions are favorable for fires to spread. just because a winds will be at a strong enough clip around 40 miles an hour in some elevations in lake county and you have low relative humidity. all of this is tied into a

weather system to the north. you can see the pacific is throwing a lot of energy our way and this is translating into relatively stronger northwest winds along the coast. it will not last that long. but we have to get all the way through and we want to get through monday before the start to quiet down. look what happens. there is a cool down coming our way. will go down 10 degrees and it will be 65 for the daytime high on wednesday instead of 75 today. north bay valley schooling from the mid-80s to the upper 70s on wednesday and you will warm back up again. san jose you go to 77 on wednesday before warming up to near 90 on saturday. the inland east bay will do the same pattern, nice and cool 78 wednesday before warming backup to 90 degrees on saturday. police say that a young man brutally attacked a great-grandmother at a park in the visitation valley area three years ago. on saturday , city leaders and family members unveiled a new sign that renamed the park after her. da lin reports another community has turned this tragedy into something positive .

dancers and the new name, it does feel like a whole new park. >> reporter: police say an 18-year-old brutally beat the 88-year-old at the park in january, 2019. investigators say it was unprovoked . police say she died from her injuries a year later. the great-grandmother lived in this beige house next to the park and exercised here every morning. the african-american and asian-american communities united to push for the renaming, after her death. the granddaughter organized and brought a lot of people together. >> there is a sense of victory and there is a sense of justice. >> everyone is coming together and not necessarily choosing to be divided as a result of this tragedy. >> reporter: while they forgive the suspect and want restorative justice for him, they admit many many family members are divided and angry.

diana hopes positive energy, healing and abundant love will help her large family find peace. >> for me to have been able to cry in this event , meant a lot for me. because i had been detached. >> reporter: five after -- five years after the attack the cases held up incorporate prosecutors and defense attorneys asked for more time to review the evidence in the case. in san francisco a group of advocates rallied outside the school district offices coming to expand language education in the city. the activists say the district is planning on cutting language programs in a couple of years and they want to protect the existing management education while also adding classes in cantonese. >> i have lived here for three years and i was amazed by people who can speak multiple languages. and i mostly lived in germany. but most germans can speak three or four

languages. why can't we as americans align many languages? >> one third of the students in the school district are asian. activists say teaching mandarin and cantonese helps everybody. the school district says in a statment we are committed to evaluating multilingual opportunities while continuing to allegedly implement budget balancing solutions. the district says last year the board of education adopted a new roadmap for language construction. coming up . katie ledecky will be on the u.s. olympic swim team for the fourth time. the results on saturday that secured her trip to the summer games in paris. coming up in sports. it was moving day at the u.s. open. only eight players are under par headed into the final-round. plus, one step forward, two steps back. the story of the giants stayed the same on saturday.

from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. welcome back. it is just about 6:30 . thank you for joining us this sunday morning. i am anne makovec in for max darrow. at least nine people are injured after a man opened fire in a detroit suburb. two of the injured our children. including an eight-year-old boy who was shot in the head and is in critical condition this morning. wendy gillette has more. >> reporter: there was panic and terror in rochester hills, michigan, just after 5:00 p.m. saturday, when a man fired as many as 28 times at a splash pad were families were trying to keep cool. >> there were multiple victims wounded on scene. our deputy's began providing emergency first aid including tourniquets. >> reporter: the sheriff said three of the victims were from the same family. two children. he says the shooting appears to be random. sheriff's deputies

descended on a nearby neighborhood after getting a description of a vehicle, tracing it to an address. they say they found a suspect dead inside the house of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. >> the reason the quick containment is critically important , in my opinion and why potentially more lives were saved , is we don't know what the next chapter was want to be . >> reporter: he was described as a 42-year-old man with mental health challenges. the motive is unclear layer. at the news conference the sheriff showed an image of a semi automatic weapon, the suspects kitchen table. >> a lot of blood. a lot of blood. >> reporter: a neighbor went to the splash pad to help the victims. >> i know these people. this is my neighborhood. friends and family members. this is horrible. >> reporter: the oakland county sheriff's office has responded to other mass shooting incidents in recent years. including in oxford, michigan, when a 15-year-old shot and killed four high school students in 2021. the sheriff called this incident a gut

punch to the community. >> another mass shooting in round rock, texas, north of boston. two people are dead and multiple others injured. police say shortly before 11:00 last night two groups began fighting with each other during a juneteenth celebration at old syllabus park and at least one pulled a gun and began shooting. they have a description of one suspect who is at large. >> we are here to celebrate and such an occasion as juneteenth and to come together as a community , is a terrific comment monumental event for us but you have it have it marred by senseless tragedy that happened at old settlers park, it breaks your heart. it breaks your heart for families coming out to enjoy their evening and now their life is forever changed as a result of somebody who could care less about somebody else's life. >> firefighters and officers working at that event were quick to respond . applying tourniquets to people injured.

families of hostages who were not saved at the rescue deal and now if anything, some of them are even more afraid than before. like the father of this person held by hamas. >> they can put an explosive belt on them to make sure that when the idf soldiers reach them they will be blessed to pieces. i will endanger my son. >> reporter: this morning israeli forces suffered the worst attack since january. eight soldiers were killed in southern gaza. according to initial reports they were traveling in an armored personnel carrier that was hit by a large explosion, believed to be a roadside bomb. israel said it is pausing fighting along a route in southern gaza to free up a backlog of trucks waiting to deliver humanitarian aid. it is not a complete cease-fire, but if it holds it may help civilians to have overwhelming

gonna write this down right quick. taking a live look outside. this is the view of the san mateo bridge on this father's day. happy father's day to all the dads. in half moon bay today people are trading in illegal fireworks for up to $200 cash with no questions asked. the sheriff's office is running the buyback program to promote safety with fourth of july around the corner. last year was the first year of this program . the collected 400 pounds of illegal fireworks and explosives. perhaps as a result the sheriff's department received fewer calls for service related to fireworks . >> every year fireworks lead to a large amount of injuries and people can lose fingers. every year a couple people dine and

a couple of teenagers in oakland hoping to become the future of u.s. olympic weightlifting. the first, they have their eyes on the podium at the national youth championships this weekend. amanda hari reports. >> beautiful. >> i am on the podium. when i am on the podium i feel like i just reflect on everything that took me to get to that moment. >> reporter: 15-year-old robert, walked into this gym what he was still in elementary school. now he is a rising high school sophom*ore, oakland tech,

lifting more than 200 pounds over his head. he had his eyes set on some big goals. including the 2028 olympics. >> the olympics after that and the olympics after that also. >> reporter: but first he and his training partner, the 16-year-old, will head to philadelphia to compete at the national championships. last year they were in the same age group and together won the teenager championship. their coach, michael jenkins, said he looks at that win as a win for oakland. >> this is where the need is. people in oakland are hurting and so we need resources. i'm tired of all the stories of doom and gloom in what is going bad in oakland and not enough stories about working. >> reporter: he opened the power strength near the embarcadero in oakland back in 2016. the hope was to throw the sport and help oakland youth. when jenkins met whitlock he said he was an unfocused kid. >> i did weightlifting first. >> reporter: his mindset shifted after the pandemic, keeping them in the gym and out of the trouble. >> we already.

time for a look at this morning's top stories. we are keeping an eye on a major wildfire in southern california called the post fire near interstate 5 in gorman. it has burned at least 4400 acres and crews do not have any containment. the fire broke out at 1:45 yesterday afternoon. near the grapevine more than 1200 people had to clear out of their homes. in the bay area, fire crews dealt with multiple small grass fires in the south bay near san jose. the biggest one scorched about 20 acres . no reports of any injuries or damages. thousands of people showed up to san francisco's fillmore street yesterday for the 79th annual juneteenth freedom celebration. a family-friendly event including a performance
